3DAPv2 Changes from 3DAPv1

The new Distiller .joboptions file is available for download

1. Change Monochrome Images subsampling to 2400dpi.

Reason: Retention of higher quality monochrome images; especially relevant with copydot scans transported in PDF.

2. Change Transfer Function to 'Remove' (turned off)

Reason: Sets the transfer functions, traditionally used to compensate for dot gain or dot loss that may occur when an image is transferred to film. The transfer functions are neither applied to the colour values by Distiller nor passed into the PDF file. This must be set appropriately in the creating application and will pass through the PDF unchanged.

3. Change Advanced/Preserve OPI Comments to 'false' (turned off)

Reason: In some workflows, the /OPI key on images is retained in the PDF. This causes Preflighting tools such as Pitstop to ignore the images. The preflight tools pass over the image as they assume it will be substitued at a later stage with the real high resolution image. As 3DAP PDFs are final form and flow across organisations, there is no need to retain OPI information.

4. Change Preserve UCR/BG to 'Remove' (turned off)

Reason: Tells Distiller whether to pass Under colour removal (UCR) and Black generation (BG) functions into the PDF file. BG calculates the amount of black to be used when trying to reproduce a particular color. UCR reduces the amount of cyan, magenta, and yellow components to compensate for the amount of black that was added by the black generation. These must be set correctly in the creating application and will pass through the PDF unchanged.

5. Change /ConvertImagesToIndexed to 'false'

Reason: This option is not exposed as a choice in the Acrobat 4.05 or 5.0 Distiller, but is specified in the .joboptions file. To gain further file compression, the Distiller converts images that use fewer than 257 colors to a CMYK indexed colorspace. This causes Preflighting tools such as Pitstop to 'caution'. To create cleaner, simpler PDFs this has been turned to false. (Reference: Adobe Systems Technical Note #5151 "Acrobat Distiller Parameters", page 24)
